A concept like electrical conductivity may seem easy to grasp, but an application that can lead students and pupils to a clearer understanding of the concept would probably be a welcome addition to a physics class. This is exactly what Conductivity is supposed to be.
A simple simulation
Conductivity is a Java-animated simulation that is meant to give you a better idea about how electrical conductivity works. There’s nothing fancy about how it looks and functions; you increase a battery’s voltage in order to start sending current. The electricity itself is represented as small moving purple balls.
To understand the principle of conductivity better, you can change the material through which the current flows. Upon switching to plastic, you will notice that electricity stops circulating. When switching to a photoconductor, the current will not flow unless you turn on the flashlight. This is meant to demonstrate how the material becomes electrically conductive only after it absorbs electromagnetic radiation (such as visible light).
A useful application
While the app won’t blow your mind, I’m sure that it has all the necessary features to allow a teacher to demonstrate the principle of conductivity with more ease. Considering this aspect, it’s safe to say that Conductivity doesn’t fail as an educational application.
Remember that this program’s purpose is to be used in class as a teaching tool; there are no in-app explanations, so there’s a small chance that you’ll actually learn something about electrical conductivity just by looking at all those purple balls.

Conductivity makes use of Java’s excellent animation capabilities. It allows you to animate an image that is supposed to represent the process of energy-transportation.
Conductivity has eight different materials to play with: plastic, water, wood, iron, copper, aluminum, metal and glass. You’re free to choose any material to demonstrate the effect of it being electrically conductive.
In this tutorial, we will use the wooden material. Wood, unlike plastic and glass, is an extremely conductive material. To switch from one material to another, simply switch the material property to “conductivity.”
The application works pretty much the same as the main application. You need to have enough battery energy to get started. You can choose the current with the setting located in the Inspector.
The most obvious change in this application is the transparent setting. All visible objects will be transparent except for the ones inside the translucent box. The translucent box is meant to represent an electron. You can observe the process of the electrons transporting energy as they fill the box with visible energy.
On top of that, you can adjust the radius of the lines that are used to represent electricity. The more lines you add, the more electrons will be able to move freely.
After you have filled the box with energy, you will have to end the simulation by pressing the “end” button. You will then be able to take a look at the animation and notice how the electrons are moving from one node to another.
Differences between the tutorials
While the main tutorial is meant to be a tutorial, Conductivity is meant to demonstrate how electrons move in the conductive materials. The only difference in that respect is that we have a very simple simulation.
Another difference is that you cannot export the program from Conductivity. If you want to save a copy of the app, you’ll have to make the necessary changes to the source code.
Another tutorial for conductivity
I’ve listed Conductivity as a different tutorial because it is meant to be used in the classroom as an educational application. The demo is simple and the usage is simple. A different tutorial would have required me to create something a bit more complex.
