The ECOSystem, is a sustainable and interdisciplinary research-based project to reduce and prevent marine pollution by providing multi-criteria analyses and decision support tools for remediation measures.

The Environment and Climate Change: In view of global climate change, sea level rise and ocean acidification can pose a serious threat to human, economic and environmental systems.

This research addresses climate impacts on coastal ecosystems and the value of ecosystem services. One of the main objectives is to establish a Global Ecosystem Services (GES) database that will include both expected and perturbed environmental conditions for coastal marine and estuarine habitats, as well as to develop risk-based decision support tools and tools to identify key sites for conservation.

Coastal ecosystems represent the most sensitive and vulnerable sectors of the marine ecosystem in terms of climate change impacts, such as sea level rise, ocean acidification and temperature increases. Developing a database of the spatial distribution and temporal variability of environmental and climatic conditions across the globe with reference to biodiversity, climate and conservation concerns, are part of the activities of the COST Action ES1501 Environmental Social Sciences Tools and Methodologies to Analyse, Model and Visualise impacts of climate change.

The establishment of a GES database that will include expected and perturbed environmental conditions for coastal marine and estuarine habitats and of several other aspects, will allow an assessment of coastal ecosystems that will develop future scenarios for marine and coastal ecosystems. This represents an invaluable tool for selecting and prioritising management and conservation measures.

In this context the GES database will include information on habitats, fish stocks, threatened species and vulnerable areas. Data obtained from this database will be integrated in the MSC-OA and MSC-EFA in the context of IUCN and the European Habitats Directive to strengthen the marine and coastal management strategies.

The main objective of the ES1501 Project is to develop a Global Ecosystem Services (GES) Database, composed of current and future environmental conditions for coastal marine and estuarine habitats.

To achieve this, the project will create and disseminate the base data and provide a user-friendly query interface, to provide standardised oceanographic data and associated value-to-the-environment approaches. The final integrated database will be a reliable, efficient platform for scientists and decision-makers to explore ecosystem sensitivities and responses to climate change for marine and coastal marine ecosystems.
